Maria Elena Navedo, MDDecember Resident Spotlight: Maria Elena Navedo, MD

In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we feature Maria Elena Navedo, MD, a second-year Internal Medicine Resident on the primary care track. We recently caught up with Dr. Navedo to learn more about her clinical and research interests, why she chose UMass Chan for residency, and her involvement with the Diversity Action Council.

Hometown?

I spent most of my childhood in Foxboro, MA, but Puerto Rico has always been my home.

What are your clinical and research interests?
My clinical interests include palliative care, medical education, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am passionate about helping patients and their families navigate serious illness in a way that aligns with their goals. My research interests include advance care planning, caregiver burden, and PCA pain management.

Are you involved in any other groups or activities at UMass Chan that you’d like to highlight?
I am involved in the Diversity Action Council as one of the co-leaders, where I have prepared a noon conference about current events and how they affect the residencies across the country. We are currently preparing for a Grand Rounds presentation in February. I find it an important part of medicine to be an advocate and amplify voices for our marginalized communities.

What makes UMass Chan a great place for your residency?
UMass has been an amazing home for my family and me. From the leadership’s support of resident-driven ideas to co-residents' friendships and collegiality, I am honored to be a part of a program that takes such care of each other during this intensive time of training. This care allows us to be at our best for patients and their families.

Favorite hobbies?
Cooking and exploring new trails.

Favorite thing to do in Worcester/Worcester area?
Going to Dean’s Park with my family or walking the Cold Harbor Trail with my dog.

What is your go-to board game?
Azul, it’s a beautiful game that my family played daily during the initial COVID-19 lockdown, and my brother and I have quite the rivalry.

Favorite guilty pleasure snack?
Salt and Vinegar Cape CodChips.

What song/artist do you hope comes on first when you press random play on your playlist?
Bad Bunny – La Mudanza.
